Football club Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht, or RSCA for short, is the undisputed Belgian record champion with 34 national titles on their record. On the international stage too, purple-white has been a force through the years.

"Our old website no longer met what could be expected of a top Belgian club. Both the front-end and the back-end were in urgent need of renewal", says David Steegen, Communication Media Manager & Spokes Person at RSCA.

Calibrate designed and developed a the new website for the Brussels football club. The entire process was entirely in our hands: from the design of wireframes to the final development of the new site. The focus was on the User Experience (UX) with a strong emphasis on achieving the business objectives. Find out here how we went about it!

Thanks to Calibrate, our website looks much fresher and more modern, and the way we work has noticeably improved for our content producers as well.

Media-focused homepage

We changed the whole structure of the homepage and turned it into a media-focused homepage. Almost every day there is news to pick up from a football club. If it is not a new transfer, there is an injury to a player or a change in the calendar. In order to show all this very clearly, clearly and chronologically, we opted for a media page with a categorized navigation. Everything is easily accessible via tabs or tags, allowing you to view all the news in an easy way. Under 'Actua' you will find the latest news, but if you are specifically looking for news about the RSCA youth teams, all you have to do is click on 'Youth'. Each time something new appears on the homepage, each item also moves up a block.

The calendar and ranking were also given a prominent place on the homepage, as was the button to the fan shop. When creating the website, we also took the mobile first approach into account the whole time. The number of visits from mobile devices is increasing year after year. Our analyses showed that more than 40% of the visitors visit the site mobile. That is why it is also important that the entire site is shown to its full advantage on the small screen. Finally, we could not lose sight of RSCA's style guide. For example, we only use fresh colours on the homepage, mainly - how could it be any other way? - purple and white.

Drupal 8 as CMS

For RSCA, it is extremely important that the content on the website is easily adaptable. On the one hand because they put new items on the website on a daily basis, on the other hand because something often went wrong when processing content on the old site. In addition, we also integrated some extra functionalities for RSCA's online team, so that they can enjoy more freedom of movement.

With the new website we lift the online presence of RSC Anderlecht back to the level that belongs to one of the largest professional football clubs in the country. This also guarantees the quality of their digital presence, because football, too, consists of more than just the grass. "Thanks to Calibrate, our website looks much fresher and more modern, and the way we work has noticeably improved for our content producers as well", concludes David Steegen.

Hosting

Calibrate also hosted the RSCA website. That created an extra challenge. Hosting a site that uses Drupal 8 as CMS and has a high number of international visitors is not an easy task. But of course we don't shy away from any challenge. Our hosting and devops people discuss the needs together with our developers, so that we were able to match the website and the hosting seamlessly. We opted for container-based hosting on Google Cloud with Kubernetes as conductor. Or as a coach, as you wish!
