The End Of Life of Drupal 7 has been extended by the Drupal community. The EOL is now November 28, 2023 and not in 2021. Drupal 7 will therefore still receive strictly necessary security updates until then. Of course there will be no other updates for D7, which will be the case for Drupal 8. In our article on the upgrade to Drupal 9 we already explained the timeline of Drupal 8 and 9.
So that sounds quite reassuring. Finally, this means that there are still 2 years left to carry out an upgrade or migration. It is of course time to start planning how to deal with this. We list the options for you.
The short answer: no. The long answer is slightly more nuanced.
Drupal 7 is old software. New development is no longer happening in it and the chance that it will continue to fit into a modern digital ecosystem is getting smaller every day. Since Drupal 7 has been around for some time, you might expect it to be mature, stable software. This could mean that it will not contain any major new leaks or problems. However, that's a good thing to look at, because of course it is always possible that the software still contains bugs or problems that are unknown today.
Drupal 9 offers even more modern features and is easily upgradeable to a new version in the future. Upgrading to Drupal 9 today is therefore a great option to offer your website a good future.
Not all modules of Drupal 8 have a Drupal 9 version yet, but that's just a matter of time. In the meantime you can perfectly create a website in Drupal 8 and then upgrade it painlessly to Drupal 9.
Possibly. Many Drupal 7 contributed modules do not support new versions of PHP. Version 7.2 of PHP was EOL in November 2020 and version 7.3 is End Of Life in 2021, namely December 6, 2021.
Because almost all Drupal websites consist of core + contrib modules, it is very likely that your website is not compatible with a supported version of PHP. The often used module Panels is an example of this.

Drupal 7 has a number of upgrade paths to Drupal 8 and 9.
A very powerful and extensive data migration is possible. For this purpose the "Migrate" module is applied, to import old content into the new Drupal website. There are also upgrade paths to take over configuration. For example, the Drupal 7 configuration can be partly mirrored in the new website.
In addition, there is no automatic update of Drupal 7 to a higher version. The rest of the work consists of checking whether "contributed modules" used in the Drupal 7 website are compatible with Drupal 8 and 9. If not, an alternative will be provided. After this exercise the new Drupal website will be configured and the data migration can be completed.
